Friendship Corner: A Place to Gather and Grow

For longtime visitors to MK Nature Center, the north-side area once known as the “formal backyard” holds fond memories. It was a space for classes, volunteer events, and even weddings, designed to show how thoughtful landscaping can create habitat at home. With grass, patio, and carefully placed plantings and water features, the area combined function with natural beauty.

When the IDFG headquarters was rebuilt, most of that space became vehicle parking, leaving a small corner neglected. In September, Friends of MK Nature Center partnered with Habiscapes Inc. to transform the remaining area. Two weeks of careful planning and hard work turned a forgotten patch of weeds into a flexible, welcoming space for programs, gatherings, and learning.

The newly named Friendship Corner celebrates the spirit of collaboration. The name recognizes the Friends of MK Nature Center and their ongoing support of educational initiatives. Visitors can now enjoy a bright, functional space designed to host classes, community events, and casual gatherings, all while reflecting MK Nature Center’s mission to inspire curiosity and connection with nature.

This project was made possible by contributions and support from IDFG Deputy Director Worthington, Communication Bureau Chief Park, the Friends of MK Nature Center Board, and key partners including IDFG Engineering staff, Kim from Designs by Kim, and Michael Wiegand with Habiscapes Inc. Their combined efforts brought new life to the space, creating a spot for learning, connection, and celebration.
